line numbers

When producing documents that are to be reviewed
I need to add a column of numbers beginning from 1
just before the left margin. It looks like this:


 1 Line 1 if the document
 2
 3 Line 2 of the document
 4
 5 Line 3 (the numbers at the margin are just for establishing a 
coordinate system)
 6
 7 Line 4  ...
 8
 9 etc.
10
11
12
...


Basically the numbering need not exactly match the document layout,
it is just for orientation and as a means of referring to specific 
phrases
in review comments.

Is there a way to do this with little effort in, say, @Report?
