The only mention of space after the period in the current Duden
is in "Hinweise für das Maschinenschreiben" (Notes for typewriting),
where it says:

  "Das nächste Wort folgt nach einem Leerschritt."
  (The next word follows after one space.)

There is no comment about space in "Richtlinien für
den Schriftsatz" (Guidelines for typesetting), so I guess
there is some leeway.
