+When you create a new census, it contains one cell with all input
+fields set to default values. But the
+<a href="group_tutorial.html#how_census_interpret">census display</a>
+shows only columns that differ from their defaults, so there&rsquo;s
+nothing to show except the <samp>Cell</samp> column.

+<h5><a name="how_month_by_month">What&rsquo;s &ldquo;month-by-month&rdquo; 
processing order? Why doesn&rsquo;t it permit solves?</a></h5>
+<p>
+Normally every cell stands alone, and you run them one after another.
+It&rsquo;s like a baton race: only one person runs at a time.
+</p>
+<p>
+That&rsquo;s fine as long as no one&rsquo;s values depend on what
+happens inside anyone else&rsquo;s contract.
+But sometimes all the contracts in a group depend on each other.
+That happens if fund charges are &ldquo;tiered&rdquo; by total case
+assets.
+For example, charges may be twenty-five basis points on the first
+$1,000,000, and fifteen basis points on anything over $1,000,000.
+The charges in the second month depend on the first month&rsquo;s
+total account value for everyone combined.
+You can&rsquo;t run each cell independently, one at a time.
+You must run everyone together, one month at a time.
+It can&rsquo;t be a baton race: it has to be a three-legged race.
+</p>

+A three-legged race can be inefficient.
+Universal life uses monthly processing.
+That means a lot of values have to be calculated when you run a cell.
+When you run one cell at a time, <tt>lmi</tt> keeps only the year-end
+values needed for printing an illustration, and throws the rest away
+to save space.
+But everyone&rsquo;s monthly values have to be kept when you run a
+whole group one month at a time.
+With a really large case, your computer may not have room for all
+those numbers.
+</p>
+<p>
+Here&rsquo;s another complication.
+The first contract processed in some month might make the case&rsquo;s
+assets cross from one tier into another.
+That affects other contracts processed later in the same month.
+<tt>lmi</tt> runs everyone in the order shown in the census.
+If you change that order, you get different results.
+The same thing happens in administration, too.
+</p>
+<p>
+Running a group month by month also makes solves hard.
+Suppose you want to solve for level premium to endow.
+Running one cell at a time, it&rsquo;s easy.
+Try one premium. If the contract doesn&rsquo;t endow, try another.
+You&rsquo;ve probably done this by hand, although the computer can do
+it faster.
+But you can&rsquo;t isolate one contract and run its values to
+maturity if they depend on the values of all other contracts.
+You have to run them all together.
+Imagine doing that by hand.
+That&rsquo;s what makes solves hard.
+If an approximation is good enough, run solves one cell at a time.

+You can set the <em>specified amount</em> directly. The death benefit
+may be different&mdash;for instance, because of the corridor.

+<h3>Working with sequence input</h3>
+
+<p>
+Sometimes input amounts need to change from one year to the next.
+</p>
+<p>

+You see this button at the right end of each field that can vary by
+duration. Press it to enter a sequence of values. A dialog like this
+pops up:

+You don&rsquo;t have to remember keywords like <samp>sevenpay</samp>
+and <samp>retirement</samp>&mdash;just pick them from the drop-down
+lists.

+When you click <samp>OK</samp>, the dialog closes, and you see the
+sequence in a compact mathematical form:
+</p>
+<pre>
+        sevenpay 7; 250000 retirement; 100000 #10; 75000 @95; 50000
+</pre>
+<p>
+If you wish, you can enter sequences in that form yourself.
+Here&rsquo;s how.
+</p>
+<p>
+When values change every year, separate them with semicolons.
+If the face amount starts at $100,000 and goes up $10,000 every year
+for five years, type
+</p>
+<pre>
+        100000; 110000; 120000; 130000; 140000; 150000
+</pre>
+<p>
+The last value repeats until the end, as you&rsquo;d expect.
+It doesn&rsquo;t &ldquo;run out of numbers&rdquo; and drop to zero.
+In this case, the face amount stays at $150,000 until maturity.
+</p>
+<p>
+You can type spaces if you like, or leave them out.
+But don&rsquo;t write a dollar sign, and don&rsquo;t separate
+thousands with commas.
+Not every country uses dollars, and some write a comma after every
+fourth digit.
+</p>
+<p>
+Values can vary even if they aren&rsquo;t numbers.
+For instance, a payment mode of
+</p>
+<pre>
+        annual; monthly
+</pre>
+<p>
+means annual in the first year, and monthly thereafter.
+For values like payment mode that aren&rsquo;t numbers, the
+<a href="pasting_to_a_census.html">pasting instructions</a>
+list the words you can use.
+</p>
+<p>
+Suppose you want to pay a $10,000 premium every year for the first
+twenty policy years, and then stop.
+You don&rsquo;t have to type the number twenty times.
+Just say
+</p>
+<pre>
+        10000 20; 0
+</pre>
+<p>
+Remember to put a zero at the end, because the last value repeats.
+</p>
+<p>
+To pay $10,000 a year for the first ten policy years, then $5,000
+a year until the end of the fifteenth year, type
+</p>

+You may want to enter payments that depend on attained age.
+Type

+</pre>

+to pay $10,000 every year until age 70.
+You can even make that the

+payment pattern for a whole group.
+It means a different number of years for different issue ages.
+Or you can make the pattern use retirement age: type

+to pay $10,000 until retirement.
+To take a $5,000 withdrawal each year after retirement, type
+</p>

+You can also say

+if you want to spell it all out.

+Sometimes you want a value to apply for a certain number of years.

+to get a withdrawal of $5,000 for ten years, no matter when retirement
+starts.

+As that example shows, you can mix different ways of saying what
+periods of time you mean.
+Read it piece by piece:

+means &ldquo;zero until retirement&rdquo;, and then

+</pre>

+means &ldquo;$5,000 a year for the next ten years&rdquo;.

+Whatever way you enter a sequence, error messages show it in a
+standard mathematical notation:

+including the endpoints.

+You can use that notation yourself if you want.
+For example, you can write the last example above as
