The account josej with password Mexico is just not valid.

I did not suggest that you do that.  I suggested creating a second test
account on the Linphone web site and then to try that in the Linphone Web 
interface.

Being a former mainframe expert you will know all about keeping backups then.

   In a terminal

   cp -pv ${HOME}/.linphonerc ${HOME}/.linphonerc.SAV

Either it is there or it does not exist.

   In a terminal

   ls -l ${HOME}/.linphonerc

   more ${HOME}/.linphonerc

As you shoule be well aware you do not need to specify the ${HOME}/ in any
of the above commands if you are in your home directory by default, if not
you can always do

    cd

to go ${HOME}

But what?

Your linphone application would not be able to register if it did not exist.
