Hi,

Up to Fedora 10, I was on the same book with you. I've been on this before with ESD, then KDE's aRTs, and I had quite a crappy experience with Pulse Audio before.

Apparently now things are much better: The latest skype for Linux (which was released 2 days ago, btw) has an excellent Pulse audio support, so now I can use Skype, mplayer, Virtual Box, Pidgin, all using the sound device through Pulse Audio at once (talking on skype while watching some clips) and it's working really great.

I know that ALSA does have mixing capabilities, but so far, it seems PulseAudio has good performance even when it comes to real time communications.

although this doesn't answer your question:
I've once come to the conclusion that pulseaudio isn't worth all the pain it puts on the user. Not only but especially with voip software like linphone, skype etc. So I deinstalled it and as a result I'm having my peace now. Everything's working as expected. With Ubuntu it's no problem to deinstall pulseaudio because hardly no other package depends on it and everything else runs quite nicely without it.
