Changing from mingw to cygwin is not an option (the windows build is something really complex). However I will have a look at this w32api/ws2tcpip.h and see how it is different from the equivalent mingw file.

Thanks for your reply Simon,

Why not consider building under Cygwin/gcc?  Just a quick check on
one of my machines shows *addrinfo functions in
/usr/include/w32api/ws2tcpip.h

I personally much prefer that environment over mingw and any MS compiler.
