Horizontal spacing in plainchant

Hi folks, I'm trying to replicate some of the music on this page (https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/worship-texts-and-resources/common-worship/churchs-year/holy-week-and-easter-0), particularly the first section (https://www.churchofengland.org/sites/default/files/2017-11/Image_470a.jpg) and am struggling to get the spacing right, they have much closer spacing between notes within a syllable, and I can't figure out how to achieve this in LilyPond.
