I hace tried open, save, and open in the download file.I have seen it flash open than close after it completed printing.And depending on how I open it, I get all the formatting details.

So the clickable examples only applies to the HTML yes.
It downloads an .ly file with the code that results in the images, for example.
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/learning/ clickable-examples
Clicking that image (click here) will download/reveal the code for what you're seeing in the example. You could also right click on it and save link as, if you prefer manually. :)
