Syntax questions

Hello all,

Lilypond and I are disagreeing about some syntax in 2.8, hopefully someone can help...

I have a statement like

  hn = { \markup{Hn.} }

in the body of my .ly file; it's not inside any blocks or anything, it's just out by itself. Lilypond claims that the above statement is a syntax error, but I have a line directly above it like

  bigBar = { \bar "||" \mark \default }

Is there something special about the \markup command that prevents it from being used in shortcuts like that?

Also, I'm having difficulty understanding the syntax of the \column command. The manual tells me I should give it a "list of args", but gives no idea as to what delimiters such a list would use. (A single example would go a long way here.) Can someone provide a simple example of \column?

Thanks a lot for any help!
