OK. What do you get with the code snippet I posted (printing the stencil 
expression)?

I would very strongly suspect 2.23.10 with
https://gitlab.com/lilypond/lilypond/-/merge_requests/1409
but the question is whether that MR had a problem or the problem is 
preexisting and was uncovered.
