I am new to Lilypond and one frustration was to find out how to write the
final double bar.  Some simple examples should include this early in the
introductory tutorials.  I searched the web to find   \bar "|."  but I did
not see it in the manuals.

Did you use the index of the Notation Reference? If you search "bar lines" you get to:

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.17/Documentation/notation/bars#bar-lines

and \bar "|." is the first example.
