The reason why my code behaved badly is that
the comment in the TeX
"% so -E'd eps is at least that high"
has a space before the % sign. That space causes
extra space to be put into the jianpu snippet,
hence complicating Lilypond's layout. Remove that
space and everything is OK.
It is not necessary to use \textLengthOn, which
is just as well because \textLengthOn can mess
up the spacing of musical directions.
