Difficulties with `make check'

Hi,

For the past few months, I have been experiencing strange failures
when checking the regression test suite, and I have just discovered
why.

I recently posted to the ImageMagick forums:

Even though this solution works for me, it is unclear how this (ugly)
command line option behaves with older versions of ImageMagick that do
not support it.

See the attached patch.  Can someone (or multiple people) try running
the regression test suite with this patch to see if it works for you?
