With only one "RET", I get a buffer: Coding system for saving this buffer: U -- utf-8-with-signature-dos - It's -dos. Perhaps because the file has a \r\l in it. If I copy make a new UNIX file without the BOM, I get Coding system for saving this buffer: - -- undecided-unix (alias: unix) Perhaps "undecided" means it has no bytes with the high bit. Hans
