However, the \a is still showing up as a control character 0x07, which I'm assuming means "alarm"? It's listed as "bell" here: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/0007/index.htm
If you read the standard definition of ascii, I think you'll find 0x07 is *defined* as "bell". It's the character that, when printed to an old-fashioned teletype, is supposed to ring the bell.
