I have found midiChannelMapping to be useful in the form
\set Score.midiChannelMapping = #'instrument
There might be issues on some midi players if two voices play notes with
different rhythms at the same pitch (I haven't tried it), but it's
definitely useful for dealing with channel wrap-around when there are lots
of staves and lyrics (which also count!) in polyphonic choral works. This
should definitely be documented in the NR.
