Well, the extra material that the troublesome commit puts on the vertical  
list is a zero-line score, and the other code didn't handle that case.

A zero-length score has its final \break at its start, which case was  
specifically excluded from consideration in a commit 8 years ago, but I  
think we have to deal with that case.
