Transferring my replies to the post on bug-lilypond to the tracker...
When you use variables, you need to quasiquote them:
\alterBroken #'direction #`(,UP ,DOWN) Staff.DynamicLineSpanner
Or, less awkwardly, use the numbers these variables stand for:
\alterBroken #'direction #'(1 -1) Staff.DynamicLineSpanner
This eliminates the warning which the original snippet creates:
warning: an outside-staff object should have a direction, defaulting to UP
However, it doesn't result in different placement for the two parts of the
broken hairpin.
