That's great.  Thanks :)  I'm pulling the branch now... although it
will be Monday here in just over an hour, so I'll probably get some
sleep before I look at it properly.

Okay, I'm convinced (pending the results of my testing); that's a lot
of advantages for a comparatively small risk.  I'd like to do at least
one more release after the next one before the end of the year anyway,
so we have the opportunity to address anything unexpected that does
come up.
