I could use "libtool gdb" in version 1.5.x; only since version 2.0 or 2.2
it became necessary to use --mode=execute.

Good point. gdb might fail to exit immediately if the user has a $HOME/.gdbinit
file with some weird contents. Therefore...

... better use "gdb --nx" instead of "gdb" here.
