On my Gentoo Linux box (which uses GNU tar 1.14, released in 2004) the traditional meaning of -o has been lost (even though it appears in the help output) resulting in a warning for every single file extracted and an error return code when the program completes. Discarding the legacy meaning (which is still the norm for many/most tar programs and often the only such option available) seems like a mistake to me.
