That's probably it. Just like the recent case where bleeding edge autoconfen do not define GREP...so libtool had to AC_SUBST GREP itself.

I'm using autoconf-2.59 and automake-1.9.1 (standard cygwin releases, which have only cosmetic changes from the official GNU versions).
