Thank you.  I think you just provided enough information :-)

$ grep '_LT_TAGVAR.*\$echo' ../m4/*

is not empty.  E.g., on linux-gnu, libtool will contain

| archive_expsym_cmds="\$echo \\\"{ global: [...]

Now I merely don't know which would be the correct way to fix these.

Ah, same as the $rm/$RM issue I'm fighting with at the moment.  I'll
commit a patch for this before I roll the alpha release.
