global symbols: doc update, patch correction

While perusing CVS, I missed the fact that the patches for the global symbol 
pipe are still messed up.  So below is a patch against CVS HEAD in order to 
correct for this. 

Furthermore, I forgot to update the documentation about the new behaviour.
