problem or no, the couple of tests I ran appeared to work okay, the 
only difference being that -Xlinker is now passed to gcc as "-Wl,", but 
it seems to call ld okay.
(insert disclaimer here with notes about couple of quick tests not 
being conclusive)

Robert, please find attached my slightly updated patch for darwin which 
should apply to head. Still passes/fails the same number of tests.
