Hmm...  This thought is very appealing to me.  It is even a reasonable
compromise, because there's an easy work-around for those who really
need to get the same library linked in multiple times: -Wl,-lfoo.  How
about just recommending this work-around in the manual and being done
with it, at least for 1.4?
