I guess we'll have to continue posting patches direct to the list for now 
then =(O|

Here is my patch for thread locking.  It causes no regressions, but I have no 
idea how to test it properly (i.e. from threaded code), and have never used 
threads before, so if someone who understands them could cast their eye over 
my patch I would be most appreciative...

Okay to commit?
