I don't know in the US, but in France I have had to choose carefully the
computer brand and reseller in order to successfully request a refund ; even
if it's illegal (but tolerated) to combine the purchase of software with the
hardware, very few constructors/resellers accept to take this step.
After choosing the computer with that criteria in mind, I contacted the
constructor (Acer) and asked them to refund the license. I had to send them
back the computer for them to format the hard drive, and after a few weeks I
got a clean computer (and my money) back !
It is a tough process but I wish you luck! ;)
