The word "monetize" is simply a symbol of something else, that is the
intention of the developer. Why do people write software is a
fundamental question. You may rephrase it by asking: what do you think
your life is worth spending your time on? Yet, you're right to point
that rms did not answer the simple part of the question, which is how to
finance free software production. The question is the same for any
cultural work, anything that is not "economic" in the sense of
"profitable", such as cultural work, community work, art, family
support, etc. These do not enter in the "trade market", they don't
belong there. Yet the people working on these tasks still need income
to ensure their own life is going on normally.

If I were to rephrase the question, I would focus on the current state
of non-trading human activity, and remark how many of us live under the
poverty line to remain consistent with our ethics; how that is
unsustainable; and end up asking *how to develop a sustainable GNU
business?* Then, to "monetize" software is not part of the question
anymore, and maybe we can think of other ways to "fairly compensate the
developers".

To the defense of rms, he's honest about his contempt and acknowledges a
state of mind that makes it difficult to give any substantial answer to
a question he thinks is the wrong question.
