Try Jistsi sometime (https://jitsi.org/index.php/Main/Download). Try
(free / dirt-cheap) VoIP using SIP/AIX providers that use GNU/Linux too
sometime (here: voip.ms or unlimitel.ca). Also try OwnCloud (or just a
webdav share!).

Please come here with questions *before* installing your next Ubuntu.

Prepare yourself for your friend calls, in a few days, asking how to
remove (or why is it there in the first place) Ubuntu One, Unity search
"features" other non-free software that will break when another upgrade
will come. A few examples: Adobe Reader? Not in the "partners
repository" anymore; Pulsbo? Cedar graphics? Oh, sorry, wontfix/cantfix.
I assume you explained and anticipated all this in your own time, for
free, which of course is a sound investment.

Prepare for Ubuntu and its community to daemonize YOU (and the apologize
nevermind the code of conduct), and biting into that.

Your perception of wasting time will probably change/evolve, as mine has.
