The whole talk was about SaaS, and email was discussed.

In the foomail.com example, he said that hosting email for someone (using the 
foomail.com example) was not SaaS because you didn't do your own computing 
inside foomail.com. Rather, you were using it to communicate with other people. 
If the example is extended to foomail.com hosting mailing lists for people, 
you're still using it for the same purpose: Communicating with other people.

He specifically addressed mailing lists & didn't call it SaaS: "suppose 
something's main job is to run mailing list and send you the mail from some 
mailing list." He didn't decree it to be SaaS because it's "sending mail to 
people that want to get it."

Just like, in "Who does that server really serve?" he said "social networking 
can extend into SaaS; however, at root it is **just a method of communication 
and publication, not SaaS.**" (emphasis added.)

He's clearly not classifying systems whose purpose is /communication with other 
people/ into the SaaS category.
