Figured it out the long way, compiled with debug messages in jk_chrootsh.c

Turns out I had /usr/sbin/bash for the shell path in /etc/passwd instead of /bin/bash

I installed jailkit, all seemed to go fine.

mkdir /disk2/jails
jk_init -v /disk2/jails basicshell netutils ssh jk_lsh

adduser foo

test logging in as foo, works.
su to foo, also works

jk_jailuser -m -j /disk2/jails/ foo

edit /disk2/jails/etc/passwd so foo uses bash

test logging as foo, gets some of the standard login messages, then "Connection closed"
test su foo, nothing, I am still root, no login
test su foo -l, same result

How do I debug the login process?
