Still no real output in syslog since I changed various jailkit permissions.  
If I use a client like psftp, when I try to login, after being prompted for a 
pw, I get:

Fatal: unable to initialise SFTP: could not connect

If I try to log in from another Linux box, I'm prompted for a pw, then am 
returned to my user prompt (in other words, connection is drpped.

I do not get this message if I login as, say, myself from either psftp or a 
shell on another Linux box.  In other word, there's not problem with the sftp
