The problem recurred. That is, the number of new posts always showed
zero.
I deleted: .newsrc and newsrc*, and all the files and directories
under ~/News, all of the home-directory files that gnus uses.
Then I stared over again, as if using gnus for the first time.
Now the number of new posts is displayed correctly.
I wonder if there is a less drastic way of accommplishing this.
