nnimap and Folder contents

Hello,

using nnimap to access my e-mail on a remote IMAP-server, I encounter
the following phenomenon: in the *Groups* buffer let there be an entry

674: nnimap+Freemail:John

1) When navigating there and pressing SPC, I am being asked

"How many articles from nnimap+Freemail:John (default 674):"

2) After pressing "Return", I get the Message

"No unread News"

and the entry in *Groups* turns to

0: nnimap+Freemail:John

------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the *Messages*-buffer, I see:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fetching headers for nnimap+Freemail:John...done
nnimap: Setting marks in John...done
No unread news
------------------------------------------------------------------------

No message headers are shown.

I can repeat this, nonetheless, and am always asked, whether I want to
get 674 messages, always with the same result. Replacing in 1) SPC with
C-u-SPC does not mend the situation.

Accessing the folder with other IMAP-clients shows, the there indeed are
674 Messages in it. I can read the folders with the clients mutt, alpine
and Thunderbird w/o problems.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Output of version-information:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
emacs-version: GNU Emacs 22.2.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version
2.12.11) of 2008-11-09 on raven, modified by Debian

gnus-version: Gnus v5.11
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have seen the same behaviour with all other Emacs/Gnus-versions I have
tried. Could this be server related? The problem seems to occur with
"large folders", smaller ones (ca. 50 entries) are displayed w/o
problems.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
In ~/.newsrc-dribble I see
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(gnus-group-set-info '("nnimap+Freemail:Olaf" 3 ((1 . 22393249)) nil
"nnimap:Freemail" ((uidvalidity . "1"))))
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for useful hints in advance!
Peter
