I usually set these group parameters for such groups:

  ((to-address . "addressofthemailinglist@example.org")
   (to-list . "addressofthemailinglist@example.org")
   (subscribed . t))

You can edit group parameters by pressing G p with the cursor on the
relevant group in the *Group* buffer.

I don't know if this is the most flawless way of doing it, though.
