I'm just guessing, but maybe it's only because the font you're using for
the terminal doesn't include the appropriate characters.  I'm using
NT/Emacs with Lucida Console font, and the following characters look
real cool:

  (setq gnus-sum-thread-tree-indent "  "
        gnus-sum-thread-tree-root "■ "
        gnus-sum-thread-tree-false-root "◊ "
        gnus-sum-thread-tree-single-indent "■ "
        gnus-sum-thread-tree-leaf-with-other "├─► "
        gnus-sum-thread-tree-vertical "│"
        gnus-sum-thread-tree-single-leaf "└─► "))
