Very strange.

It looks like you are not sending the right stuff for a pserver login.
You might try setting the environment variable CVS_CLIENT_LOG to the
prefix of a pathname into which a ${CVS_CLIENT_LOG}.in and
${CVS_CLIENT_LOG}.out files will be written which will have the record
of what was sent by CVS over the port 2401 connection.
