When I have had problems like this before it was because of network routing problems.  In my case I was connecting to via a domain name that went outside my network and then back in.  The router was kept disconnecting after a fairly small amount of activity for CVS as well as SSH.

If you think this may be your problem, try connecting with the local IP address of the CVS server.  That is how I fixed my problem.

This sort of thing has happened on every checkout I've tried from our local
repository.  I tried several different top level directories and same thing.

I've checked out large projects from public repositories with no problems.
