I can see how that would be a problem. However, we use real computers. 
;) In this case both the client machine and the server are Linux boxes. 
Also, the directories in question don't have similar ones with only case 
differences in the names.

So, what I've done is tried it as another user, and on some different 
filesystems. It seems that it fails only on one particular filesystem 
(OnStore) so it looks like it's not a CVS problem but a filesystem 
problem. Thanks.
