seeing as the manual [1] is only having you do an update, you could put the
live site on a branch and development on the trunk [2] and when you are
happy with the staging results merge the branch versions to the trunk (look
in this email list's archive for a lot of tagging and planning you should
do). If you do a normal checkout on the staging site and a checkout of the
branch on the live site then the updates will keep them that way.

[2] look at branch tags, and you could have it the other way around if you
wanted.
