Version Numbers in CVS

Hi,

     I'd like to know how CVS uses Versions in the files. I know how to use de 
Branches, and I searched a lot, and discovered that they use the numbers in the 
versions like "majornumber.minornumber.bugfixes", but I don't understand the 
way how CVS increments the numbers in the versions! If someone know how it 
works, please tell me, i need to know about it as fast as possible!
