I don't see an option in configure, so most likely someone localy made a mod
the source to make it work.

looks to me like you have two choices,
1) mod the source and compile for your location (you might even be able to get
the maintainers to accept a diff, so its easier for you in the future),
2) install a gnu rsh http://www.gnu.org/software/inetutils/inetutils.html
