The limitation is that of the file system(s) on which you place your
repository and for which you use a TMPDIR for checkout. You also may
need to worry about the size of individual files exceeding your
available virtual memory.

I personally use a cvs repository that is in excess of 18GB on a daily
basis using a FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE operating system as the server.
The real operational limits will be determined by the filesystem capacity
of your operating system.
I have done planning for a filesystem that can hold a 100GB cvs
repository. Of course, when the server has that much data, you had best
be using very fast disk technology or be prepared to wait a very long
time to do a checkout...

I suggest you consider upgrading. That version of cvs is very old.
