Permission denied

I have moved the repository but I keep getting this message when I try to
checkout the repository:

cvs -d /var/lib/cvsroot checkout CVSROOT
cvs checkout: warning: cannot write to history file
/var/lib/cvsroot/CVSROOT/history: Permission denied
cvs checkout: Updating CVSROOT
cvs checkout: failed to create lock directory for `/var/lib/cvsroot/CVSROOT'
(/var/lib/cvsroot/CVSROOT/#cvs.lock): Permission denied
cvs checkout: failed to obtain dir lock in repository
`/var/lib/cvsroot/CVSROOT'
cvs [checkout aborted]: read lock failed - giving up

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?
