My client is the standard Unix cvs command line tool (1.11.15), what 
would be the "correct" client?

The urgency of the problem disappeared however: The application using 
the files in question will process them with both <cr> or <nl> 
delimiters, so I already changed all EOLs. Now both cvs and the app are 
happy.
