Thanks for the help, all.  No, I wasn't planning on doing a checkout - I 
assumed that that would crash and burn somehow - just an export.

Agreed, hence my careful qualification; and, agreed.  I just couldn't bring 
"top-level directories" to the tip of my tongue, somehow.  Not CVS's most 
memorable piece of terminology, although I'm at a loss to suggest a 
replacement...
