"cvs: command not found" but path is ok

Can anyone help me solve the problem demonstrated below?  I can checkout the 
project when logged onto machine.lehigh.edu, but not from my desktop linux box:

/usr/bin/cvs

address@hidden phil $ env | grep CVS
CVSROOT=:ext:address@hidden:/home/prl2/projects/cvs
CVS_RSH=ssh

address@hidden phil $ ssh address@hidden which cvs
/usr/local/bin/cvs

address@hidden phil $ ssh address@hidden printenv | grep ^PATH
PATH=/usr/bin:/etc:/usr/sbin:/usr/ucb:/usr/bin/X11:/sbin:/usr/local/bin

address@hidden phil $ cvs checkout Term-Interact
/usr/bin/bash: cvs: command not found
cvs [checkout aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages if any)
