cvs history and 'U' record type

Hi,

Under what circumstances does a 'U' record-type get recorded in the cvs
"history" file? We've been using CVS for sometime now, but the following
command doesn't reveal *any* records of this type:

  cvs history -a -e | grep ^U

I've experimented and simulated various "update" operations, but none seem to
produce it - all comments much appreciated....
