:pserver:address@hidden:/CVS instead

But is that the user you specified in your $CVSROOT?  When you run with
:ext:, your local userid is used as the remote userid, but when you run
with :pserver:, you specify an explicit userid:

        :pserver:address@hidden:/CVS
